Prepare for Procurement

Potential users of form-fill-seal (FFS) machinery may experience a bit of “sticker shock,” but if they have a long-term strategy and look at overall benefits, the capital expense may be worth the investment.
 
 
So reports Eric Pearson, manager, packaging engineering, Boston Scientific, who will be sharing his career experiences in the FFS procurement lifecycle at the upcoming packaging session at MD&M East 2009 in New York City June 9. Pearson has been involved in many FFS machine procurements and installations.

  • The Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology (IEST; Arlington Heights, IL) has published a new Recommended Practice (RP) for the selection of flexible packaging materials for use in contamination-critical applications. The RP includes references to FDA, ISO, and other pharmaceutical and medical device packaging standards.

  • The need to test for minute levels of gases and vapors in pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, and nutraceutical packages is growing, reports Anthony Ahmed, product manager for Mocon Inc. (Minneapolis). “With the advancements in genetics, live medicines with living organisms are now more prevalent,” he explains. “The products have low tolerances for atmospheric influence.”

  • The GTS-52 has been prequalified at minimum and maximum loads, under summer and winter conditions, in CCT’s ISTA-certified and CGMP-compliant labs. The GTS-52 has also been tested at -30°C for up to 96 hours using dry ice. Payload specific qualification is available.

  • Success also depends upon clear communication between partners, emphasized Lora Keena, vice president, quality assurance and regulatory affairs, for Oliver-Tolas Healthcare Packaging (Grand Rapids, MI). Keena spoke at MD&M West 2009's preshow packaging conference. "It is important to gain a thorough understanding of expectations through due diligence before projects begin," she said. "This includes performing risk assessments so both parties can anticipate potential failures before they occur."

  • Vyomesh Joshi, executive vice president of the HP Imaging and Printing Group (IPG), has been presented with the 2009 Prism Award. Presented annually by New York University (NYU), the Prism Award recognizes distinguished leadership in the graphic arts and communications industry.
